Germany, a prominent member of European Union and one of the biggest bilateral donor to Nepal, has expressed its support to the ongoing peace process in Nepal.
In his message on the occasion of the 16th anniversary of the Day of German Unity, German ambassador to Nepal Franz Ring has stated that his country “sincerely wishes that the process will lay the foundation for a sustainable peace in Nepal and for stability for its people who have suffered terribly under the armed conflict for more than a decade.”
Pointing out the need for free and fair elections to consolidate the democratic gains, ambassador Ring said, “A fundamental prerequisite for a peace settlement and the full restoration of democracy is an atmosphere that allows for free and fair elections in the whole of Nepal, in particular, also in the countryside.”
The German envoy has also welcomed the arrival of Personal Representative of the United Nations Secretary General to help Nepal’s peace process. ” Germany welcomes (his) arrival and fully supports his assistance for the ongoing peace process and an effective arms management.”
“I would also like to underline that an integral part of the peace process remains the respect of human rights and of international human rights commitments,” he stated.
