The 18th national convention of the All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU), the student wing of the CPN (UML), has elected Thakuar Gaire as the president of the organisation.
Gaire secured 902 votes against his contender Yagya Raj Sunuwar who got 479 votes. The convention held in Chitwan also elected Ram Kumari Jhakri as the vice-president or the union, Gokul Gharti as general secretary and Upendra Mahato as treasurer.
The convention endorsed the political report presented by outgoing president Khim Lal Bhattarai. The student body formally adopted a resolution to launch nationwide campaign in favour of democratic republic.
Meanwhile, the Maoist-affiliated student union, All Nepal National Independent Students Union-Revolutionary, has also concluded its 17th national convention in Kathmandu, electing a 61-member central committee led by incumbent president Lekhnath Neupane.
The ANNISU-R convention passed a proposal demanding immediate dissolution of the present government and the parliament to be replaced by an interim government and interim legislative. The union also decided to launch a campaign for republican system.
