A full bench of Justices Govinda Prasad Parajuli, Rana Bahadur Bam and Bhup Dhoj Adhikari gave permission to police authorities to detain Thapa for five more days, ordering them to bring case against him within five days. Police are said to have sought two-week-long detention to the NSU leader.

This is for the second time the Special Court has extended Thapa’s custody. Before this, the court had extended his custody by five more days as his 7-day custody ended last Wednesday.

The firebrand NSU leader was arrested by plainclothes policemen from Maitidevi on July 27 when he was returning to his home after meeting student leaders detained at Amam Nagar Police Post. Citing his anti-monarchy slogans at a program on July 25, authorities are preparing to file a sedition case against him under the Offence against the State Act.

Following his arrest, student organisations have been carrying out angry protests in the capital and outside.

Thapa has been detained at Hanumandhoka police office.
