Kathmandu, June 21: Government declared Friday a national holiday to celebrate the day as 10th national census day described as a national programme, the Home Ministry said Thursday.

According to a rescheduled programme, the census will now be completed June 26 instead of today  because the national campaign was disturbed by the June 1 carnage at the Narayanhiti Royal Palace killing or injuring 14 royals or relatives, including King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya.

Data is currently being collected after the end of the first phase of the campaign enlisting households nation-wide.

Maoists have disturbed work in districts controlled by them especially in far west Nepal; rebels control at least seven of the nation’s 75 administrative districts. First results will be available mid-August. Nepal’s current population is estimated at 23 million.
