Security forces opened the Butwal-Palpa section of the Siddhartha Highway removing obstructions placed by Maoists, fresh reports said.

The Maoist insurgents had blocked the highway since Monday night. According to state-run Radio Nepal Friday, Maoist insurgents had felled trees and placed logs along the highway in a number of places.

When security forces attempted to clear the highway, frequent exchange of gunfire took place between the forces and Maoist insurgents on Tuesday and Wednesday, the report said.

Hundreds of passengers traveling along the highway were stranded.

The security forces have started a search operation for Maoists along and near the highway.
