Kathmandu, Jan. 27: Leader of Nepali Congress and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba said today that the promotion of German language in Nepal has contributed to the further consolidation of bilateral relations between Nepal and Germany.
Deuba was expressing the view, while speaking as the chief guest at a felicitation programme organised in honour of senior German language instructor Michael Chand.
Deuba highly commended Chand’s outstanding contribution towards the promotion of German language in the country.
“I am very happy to get an opportunity to felicitate Chand, who had taught me German language in the early 80s.”
He further said that the promotion of German language has also helped to bring in tourists from Germany, which has emerged as one of the most powerful countries in the world.
Addressing the programme, Dieter Ebser, First Secretary at the German Embassy, said that many students in Nepal have keen interest in learning German language.
Dieter also highlighted the contribution of Chand for the development and promotion of German language in Nepal. He added that the German language, which used to be the language of ancient philosophy in the past, has now been one of the most common languages in the European Union.
Michael Chand, who worked for Goethe Institute from 1982 to 1997 as a German language teacher, said that the felicitation has encouraged him further to promote German language and he would devote himself to impart knowledge to the students.
He had also worked as chief of the German language department at the then Goethe Institute, which was closed down in 1997.
He said he has still to do a lot for the promotion of German language to give a boost to the country’s tourism.
The felicitation programme was chaired by Ramesh Man Pradhan.
On behalf of the organising committee, Maheshwar Bhattarai and Mukund Raj Pant also spoke about the contribution of Chand.
