Floods and landslides triggered by unprecedented monsoon rains since Sunday night have killed at least eleven persons in Kathmandu Valley leaving behind a trail of destruction, police said. Landslides overnight buried alive seven persons in Matatirtha and rescuers are searching for 10 more missing persons.
A landslide also killed one person at Barbhyang and injured two others in the Valley, police said. Three persons were killed in floods and house collapses Monday.
The Hanumante Khola in Bhaktapur overflowed its banks flooding the Sunrise Garment Industries and the Samsung television assembly plant, police said. The sun played hide and seek as it attempted to break the thick cloud cover over the Valley the whole on Tuesday; the Valley experienced intermittent drizzles bringing some relief.
Many residential areas are still under water in the Valley Tuesday after the flood waters of Bagmati and other rivers entered homes. The Bagmati river swept away drinking water pipeline between Khokana and Pharping cutting off water supply to Kokara, Bungmati, Shaibu, Bhaisepati and parts of Patan area, residents said.
Meteorologist Krishna Bhakta Manandhar said Kathmandu recorded an unprecedented 169.5 mm of rainfall in 24 hours until 8.30 AM Tuesday when 102.8 mm of rainfall was recorded on July 28,1972.
Floods and landslides have killed seven others in Kavre and Sarlahi. Flood waters of the Bagmati have inundated many villages in Sarlahi, reports said. Gaur is under water as officials tried to save documents at government offices which remained closed.
Rains have been lashing east, central and west Nepal for the last four days while far west Nepal is still under a dry spell, reports said.
