Over two dozen houses have been swept away and over 100 households displaced in Basantapur VDC in Rautahat district by the flood triggered by heavy downpour at the Bagmati River Wednesday night, reports said.

Residents of ward no. 6 and 7 of the VDC were displaced after the swollen river destroyed a dam and inundated the area.

A team comprising security personnel and officials of the Nepal Red Cross Society have been conducting rescue and rehabilitation works in the area. The villages lie some five km east of Gaur, the district headquarters.

Local authorities have urged the Home Ministry to provide immediate relief and urgent assistance in building an embankment. The river has already eroded 300 meters out of the 700 meter embankment.

Other nearby villagers have been shifting towards safer localities as the water level in the swollen river is yet to recede.

Flood also hit locals of Dhuseni area in Tishtung VDC on Thursday due to heavy rain that began on Wednesday night.
