The European Commission has announced to fund smaller projects in Nepal under the European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR) scheme with 490,000.00 euros through grants to INGOs and NGOs for the year 2006.

In a press release, the agency said, “Since Nepal became a focus country for EIDHR support in 2001, the European Commission has funded 16 EIDHR micro projects in Nepal.” The projects have been implemented in 30 districts across the country and have a total value of € 775,902. 340,000 Euros have been allocated for fostering a culture of human rights while 150,000 Euros have been allocated for advancing equality, tolerance and peace in the country.

The EIDHR is designed to promote core value of European Union by providing financial and moral support to civil society initiatives concerning human rights and democratization in third countries. Its general objectives are to respond rapidly to requests for small-scale financial support for initiatives designed to promote and protect human rights and democratization as well as efforts aimed at conflict resolution.
