The European Union (EU) has called upon the Maoists in Nepal to abandon violence paving the way for peace talks to end the six-year long insurgency.

The Danish Embassy, the Presidency of EU in Kathmandu, issued a press statement Wednesday condemning the violence perpetrated by the Maoist terrorists. The EU has also shown grave concern towards the violation of human rights by the security forces in course of launching operations against the insurgents.

It has regretted the continuation of killings by the Maoist rebels even after announcing not to attack political workers, the press release said.
