Environmentalists discuss issues

Kathmandu: On the occasion of World Environment Day, Environmental Engineering Programme, Department of Civil, Institute of Engineering and Society of Public Health Engineers (SOPHEN) jointly organised one day national seminar on “Environmental engineering: Challenges and opportunities” here today

The inaugural session was chaired by Dinesh Chandra Pyakurel, secretary at the Ministry of Physical Planning and Works.

Member of National Planning Commission Dr. Jagadish Chandra Pokharel was the chief guest of the programme. Dr. Bindu Lohani from ADB, Manila gave a key note address.

Total of eighteen papers in various environmental fields viz. water pollution, water and wastewater treatment, environmental impact assessment, environmental policy and legislation, solid and hazardous waste management, eco-sanitation, urban environment, arsenic contamination were presented in two technical session.

Most of the papers focused on general issues in respective areas and possible opportunities for environmental enhancement.

The seminar was attended by 250 environmental engineers, lawyers, environmental science students.
