Eight Maoists, including Nara Bahadur Rai, President of Kirti Mukti Morcha, surrendered to local authorities in Sankhuwasaha Tuesday, Radio Nepal said.

The Morcha is affiliated with the rebels and was fighting for autonomy in the eastern hills. The defectors said they will renounce violence and live normal lives.

Meanwhile, CPN-UML General Secretary Madav Kumar Nepal and senior Maoist leaders met last week in Baharaich and not Lucknow, Annapurna Post said quoting an unnamed source. Nepal has been saying the meeting took place in Lucknow.

The disinformation was for security reasons, the newspaper said.
