KATHMANDU: Regular studies and educational activities have been severely affected with most schools closed across the country, countrywide reports said. The Maoists affiliated students –ANNISU-R announced an indefinite strike in all urban-based educational institutions in Nepal from today.

According to reports received from across the country, most private and government owned schools and colleges in rural areas have also been closed. The ANNISU-R had said their strike would be based ‘only in urban areas’.

The ANNISU-R has announced the strike demanding the immediate implementation of the accord met between the organization, the government and the educational institutions last year.

The Maoist affiliated students, the government and the educational institutions had agreed to curtail 29 percent of the fees from the existing structure. The government had also agreed to provide free education up to the secondary level and to curtail 25 percent fees in the higher secondary level. Moreover, ANNISU-R has demanded the removal of the terrorist tag labeled against the union.
