The Election Commission (EC) is starting collection of voters list for the upcoming election of the constituent assembly from today.
Organizing a press conference in the capital on Monday, Chief Election Commissioner Bhoj Raj Pokhrel said that the EC is carrying out electoral rolls updating from Tuesday to February 6 across the country.
The EC would also try to include all Maoist combatants stationed in different cantonments in the temporary voters’ list during that period.
However, the EC will update voters’ name lists in 58 village development committees of the Himalayan belt only after March.
Pokhrel also informed that the EC has sought help and coordination from the United Nations and the Carter Center in order to monitor the electoral rolls updating process.
At present, the EC has mobilized approximately 27,000 staff, including teachers from public schools, to update voters’ name lists.
According to reports, the EC has informed the Home Ministry that it is planning to set up over 10,000 polling centers across the country.
In order to integrate temporary voters from Nepali Army and Nepal Police, the EC has proposed to set up polling centers inside Army Headquarters and all regional headquarters, battalion and company for the Army, and at police headquarters, barracks and company for Nepal Police. Meanwhile, Maoist combatants would be able to cast their votes at their respective cantonments.
Similarly, those civil servants, whose names have been included in temporary electoral rolls, would be able to cast their votes in their respective district headquarters.
