A group of taxi drivers Tuesday allegedly beat up Ram Avatar Shah, an official of Department of Standards and Quality Measurement, which has made it mandatory for all taxis and tempos to keep a rate card of fares, the Himalayan Times said.
Shah, who heads the taxi and meter unit of the Department, was on a taxi when he noticed that the driver did not have the “rate card” and the taxi-meter showed an incorrect reading, the daily said.
Shah then showed his identity card to the driver and told him to accompany him to the Valley Traffic Police Office (VTPO) at Ramshahpath, the daily said.
“The driver, in return, asked Shah to wait for him by his taxi for a while. He came back with three others and assaulted Shah who had to be admitted at Bir Hospital and was discharged after preliminary treatment.”
Police has been looking for the culprits after Shah lodged complaints at the VTPO and District Police Office, Hanumandhoka, the daily said.
