Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister KP Oli returned Kathmandu on Thursday after attending the Ministerial Meeting of Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Malaysia.
The meeting was held on May 29-30 at Putrajaya, Malaysia.
A statement by the foreign ministry said, “Addressing the session on May 30, deputy prime minister outlined the challenges that have emerged as a result of rapid transformation of global security and economic situation in the last decade, and added these issues make the NAM all the more relevant thereby further reinforcing its relevance and its founding principles and decisions.”
The statement further said, “He (DPM) underlined the urgent need to sincerely uphold, defend and promote multilateralism, peaceful settlement of disputed UN reforms, disarmament and international security, democracy and human rights, North-South and South-South Cooperation as well as fight against international terrorism and requirement to address developmental, social and humanitarian concerns in accordance with the UN Charter principles and international law.”
Oli, on the occasion, sought support from the NAM member countries for Nepal’s candidacy to non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council for 2007-2008.
The ministerial meeting was held to review preparations for the forthcoming conference of the Head of the State or Government of the NAM to be held in Havana, Cuba on September 15 and 16 this year.
