US ambassador to Nepal, Michael Malinowski suggested Sunday that the government must devise a new strategy to fight against terrorism instead of clinging on to the provision of emergency as the only ultimate tool, the Himalayan Times reported.

“The situation at present is terrible. Everyone should think of a new strategy to end violence,” Malinowski told reporters after attending a function at St. Xavier’s College.

He did not however spell out what the new strategy ought to be like.

The US envoy urged the Maoists to lay down their arms and seek a peaceful solution. He stated that the question was not only about the extension of emergency but also the commitment of the authorities to end violence triggered by the six-year old insurgency.
