Deepak Rai wins Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon

Deepak Rai won the fourth edition of the Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon after completing the race in race in 3 hours, 28 minutes and 27 seconds.

Furrie Sherpa was the runner up with a time of 3 hours, 35 minutes and 39 seconds while Lok Bahadur Rokya finished third in 3 hours, 39 minutes and 46 seconds.

Among the women, 35-year-old mother of three Ang Dami Sherpa finished first with a time of 5 hours 6 minutes and 55 seconds while 16-year-old school-girl Mingma Chhamgi Sherpa timed 5 hours 11 minutes and 56 seconds to stand second. Defending champion Yangdi Sherpa could only manage the third position.

American Tom Perkins, 22, was the first among the foreigners completing the race in 6 hours 1 minute and 24 seconds.

His overall position was 80th. Tris Kelly of United Kingdom finished second with a timing of 6 hours 11 minutes and 21 seconds, six minutes ahead of Ryan Miller of USA.

140 participants including 21 foreigners had participated in the tournament.

The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frang Erwin Ring and Pakistani Ambassador to Nepal Sohail Amin distributed prizes and trophies to the winners and other participants of the event.

According to organizers, Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon is a most befitting tribute to these great souls who climbed Mt Everest for the first time in the history of human civilization.

Starting from Everest Base Camp at 5356m (17,149 feet) height in Nepal, the race finishes at the Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar at 3446m (11,300 feet).

“Through this Marathon, we would like to convey the message to the whole world that Nepal is the best place for adventure sports event. Our main purpose is to promote Nepal as one of the renowned Adventure Sports Tourism Destination,” a press statement issued by Organizing Committee Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon-2006 said.
