KATHMANDU, Jan 9: The Communist Party of Nepal Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPN-UML) is confident that the party’s upcoming 7th general convention would be a milestone in ending the anarchy and the crisis facing the nation.

“The convention will surge hope among the party cadres and the people as well as play a vital role in finding a way out of the present crisis,” UML General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal told a press conference organised at its central office, Balkhu on Thursday.

Nepal was speaking about the decisions of the party’s 33rd central working committee meeting and the relevance of its 7th convention to be held in Janakpur next month.

Nepal said that the national gathering would dampen the efforts to put the country in reverse gear and boost the morale of the party functionaries and the common people in protecting the achievements of the Popular Movement of 1990 BS.

The party’s recent central committee meeting had unanimously approved Nepal’s political report and on party organisation. The reports will be given a final touch after incorporating suggestions from the convention representatives, Nepal said. “It will be a convention for party’s unity.”

However, the meeting failed at reaching a consensus among the central committee members on issues relating to the party’s statute.

At the meeting, UML Standing Committee member K.P. Sharma Oli had turned down the requests of many central committee members to drop a separate proposal for a presidential system in the party. Oli stood against the general secretarial system arguing that it would make the party chief dictatorial while the presidential system would help decentralise power at various levels of the party.

Oli has vowed to put his proposal before the delegates during the convention, the highest body of the party.

“We will settle everything in a democratic manner. Everyone has the right to put forth his or her views at the conference. We reached many decisions at the recent meetings based on democratic norms,” said Nepal.

Stating that the UML follows democratic norms in its internal exercise, Nepal said, “Unlike other parties, every UML’s cadre must face elections to get a place in the different layers of the party.”
We encourage the party functionaries to be more active and involved in the decision-making process as well as have leadership qualities, he noted.

Touching on the current political scenario, Nepal reiterated the formation of an all-party government to resolving the burning problems of the country as well as protecting the values of constitutional monarchy and the spirit of the Constitution. “There is a need for forging understanding among the Monarch and the political parties.”

The theme of the forthcoming convention of the party is “Democracy, Peace and Overall Development- Way out of Regression” while its slogan is “Let’s Protest Ultra-Rightist and Ultra-Leftist- Lets Struggle for the Protection of Peace and Democracy.”

A 25-member main management committee has been formed under the convenorship of the party’s standing committee member Bharat Mohan Adhikari, and 13 sub-committees have been constituted under this committee to make the convention successful.
