Kathmandu, Feb 25 Five more finals were played on the fifth day under the preliminary round of the All Nepal Carlsberg Snooker Championship, organised by Gorkha Brewery Ltd in association with Billiars, Snooker and Pool Association of Nepal.
Durlav Karki overcame the challenge of Sudan Shakya to clinch the first position in the best of five frame final at Royal Dilliard, Karki, however had a poor start to the final, losing first two frames quite tamely at 22-45, 12-45. But, making one of the greatest comebacks, he completely took Shakya by surprise. His cautious approach paid dividend at last as he won the next three frames 45-38, 55-42, 48-38 to lift the title along with a winner’s cheque of Rs 5,000. Shakya collected runner’s up-prize of Rs 3,000.
The highest break of 22 points at the venue, registered by Jeevan in the second round, though remained untouchded, making him entitled to Rs 2,000.
Following the match, deputy managing director of Carlberg Soren Thygerson, marketing manager Rajendra Gurung and joint secretary of Billards, Snooker and Pool Association of Nepal Rajesh Bajracharya distributed prizes to the winner, runner-up and highest breaker.
In one interestings final played at 21 Club, Mahesh Shrestha beat Roshan Shahi in a gruelling battle. Shahi, who with a highest break of 42 points to his credit in the quarterfinal had a poor day as he was bereaved of luch several times during the match. While trying to finish off the frame, he ended up missing even easy pockets.
Shrestha eventually closed the match in seventh frame with the score of 67-31, 50-15, 54-40, 41-42, 29-75, 77-42, 66-24.

Hetauda, Feb. 25: Member of Parliament Birodh Khatiwada laid the foundation stone for the Thadokhola Drinking Water Project at Ward No. 3, Hadikhola Village in Makwanpur district recently.
According to the district water supply office, the Rs 1.99 million project being undertaken as part of the current fiscal year’s local development programme will be complete by July-end this year.
The project is being constructed with the grant assistance of His Majesty’s Government and Mobilization of Local Voluntary Labour.
Bhaktapur, Feb. 25: The visiting team of South Asian Journalists visited the National Tuberculosis Centre (NTC) and SAARC Tuberculosis Centre (STC) at Thimi, Bhaktapur district recently.
The team led by Sri Lankan journalist Aruni John is here at the invitation of the Panos South Asian Office Nepal.
The team has 18 journalists from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal.
On the occasion, centre’s director Dr Dirgha Singh Bam said the DOTS programme which began in 1996 is now under implementation in 49 districts of the Kingdom and the cure rate of the disease here is 85 to 89 percent.
The centre has also implemented the DOTS programme in prisons, medical colleges and private hospitals and clinics. On the occasion, centre’s Deputy Director Dr Prahlad Kumar also spoke on the occasion.
Kathmandu, Feb. 25: The Karnali Students Welfare Committee organised a discussion programme recently on the feature film ‘Caravan’ which is based on the troublesome life of the people of the higher areas of Dolpa district in Karnali zone.
On the occasion, former speaker Damannath Dhungana said a special fund should be created from the income raised from the film for the development of the people of Dolpa in various sectors.
Executive Director of the Nepal Tourism Board Pradip Raj Pandey said the film Caravan will make a great contribution to the development of tourism sector.

Rautahat, Feb. 25: A humiliating incident surfaced at a wedding here in which the relatives of the groom had to return with empty hands following differences with the bridegroom’s family.
Madan Biswakarma of Betauna village in Shantapur VDC-4 and Parvati Biswakarma of New Road in Sarlahi were to wed amid a function at Nunathar Temple a Parai Monday. Family members from both sides had gathered for the wedding ceremony.
But both sides were sidelined following a hot dispute about the groom already being married.
The groom’s side had failed to properly inform the bridegroom’s family of the previous marriage from which the groom had himself walked away as the girl had refused to live with him.
“I had to marry again because of that failed marriage. The girl and her parents had agreed to this wedding, but they have been instigated by local villagers”, the groom-to-be rued.
According to a relative of the groom, all the formalities had been completed.
But when it became impossible to go through with the wedding as the family of the bride stuck to their stand of not allowing her to marry someone who had already been married before, all paraphernalia including the dowry were returned.
Bhadrapur, Feb. 25: Member of the CPN-ML Standing Committee Chandra Prakash Mainali inaugurated the 14th district conference of the all Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU) Jhapa in Dhulabari recently.
A total of 300 persons including observers and representatives are taking part in the two-day conference.
On the occasion, Mainali said students should fight for the rights and interests of the people.
Members of the party central committee Naresh Kharel and Man Kumar Gautam and FNCCI central secretary Krishna KC also expressed their views at the function chaired by conference convenor Nirmani Baral.

Mahendranagar, Feb. 25: A two-day women and child awareness seminar organised by the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare concluded in Khalanga, the headquarters of Darchula district recently.
Fifty persons including members of the district child welfare committee, representatives of NGOs and local bodies and guardians took part in the seminar.
On the occasion, under-secretary at the Ministry Bhupendra Poudel spoke on the need of educating the children and at the same time protecting their rights. He also shed light on the objectives of the seminar.
From the chair, Chief District Officer Bed Prakash Lekhak said that it was the responsibility of the society to ensure healthy mental and physical development of the child.
The seminar was inaugurated by DDC chairman Ganesh Singh Thagunna.
Meanwhile, youth social workers Kishor Chaudhari and Mrs. Sita Kumari Chaudhari have provided an assistance of Rs 25,000 in cash to the Sarbada Literary Foundation, an institution dedicated to the development of language, literature, art and culture.
According to an agreement signed by Foundation chairman Thakur Belbase and the Chaudharis, the assistance will be utilised in printing post cards bearing pictures of poet laureate Laxmi Prasad Devkota, dramatist Balkrishna Sama, prose writer Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala and novelist Parijat.
The post cards will be published by mid-March, according to the foundation.
Kathmandu, Feb. 25: General Secretary of Amnesty International (AI) Pierre Sane paid a courtesy call on chairman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs and Human Rights Committee Som Prasad Pandeya recently.
On the occasion, discussions were held on the state of human rights in Nepal and the role played by the committee in various aspects of human rights.
Other members of the delegation and the president of Amnesty International Nepal Krishna Kandel were also present on the occasion.
Similarly General Secretary of Amnesty International (AI), a Human Rights Organization, Pierre Sane has underlined the need for all Nepalis to move ahead with high morale to strengthen the human rights situation in the country.
Sane, speaking at a mass meeting organized by the AI Nepal Chapter here recently, said street plays containing joys and sorrows of the people will play a significant role in strengthening the human rights situation and raising public awareness in the country.
Programme Director of the Asia and Pacific Region Ruri Mungoven said during their meetings with representatives of the government, political parties and intellectuals, they spoke of the need to solve problems in a peaceful way, protect children’s rights and root out child labour.
Looking at children here, we are fully convinced that their future, the situation of human rights and the future of the entire nation is bright, he further said.
Chairman of human rights and Peace Society Krishna Pahadi disclosed that 3.6 million children have been deprived of education and a large number of minors are compelled to work.
On the occasion, the Natya Samuha had presented a street drama based on child labour directed by litterateur Ashesh Malla. The drama has already been enacted in 40 districts.
In line with the programme of declaring different places of the world as torture-free areas, Tundhikhel, the venue of the mass meeting, was declared a torture free place.
Meanwhile, General Secretary of Amnesty International (AI) Pierre Sane made it clear that if enough attention had been given to the incidence of human rights violations which have taken place in the past four years, it would not have affected every sector.
Sane, while speaking at a function organized by AI Nepal Chapter here recently, said it is a matter of sorrow that human rights violations are taking place in a democratic nation.
Stating that peace can be achieved only by safeguarding human rights, the AI General Secretary noted that only genuine political commitment can stop human rights violations.
AI cannot take actions against any nation or person violating human rights, but can offer suggestions for improving the situation, he added.
Mahottari, Feb. 25: The ancient Laxmi Narayan Temple at Simardahi village of Mahottari district believed to be hundreds of years old is lying in a dilapidated condition for lack of renovation and maintenance as it has no source of income of its own.
A religious trust for the upkeep of the temple was set up around 1816 Bikram era during the time of King Girvana Yuddha Bir Bikram Shah Dev and 176 bigha of land allocated to it.
Although the temple trust owns a lot of property, lack of income from the property has resulted in paucity of funds for even conducting regular worship and religious offerings, according to temple priest Narayan Das.
He said the Janakpur Trust was collecting the income of the temple from 96 bigha of land it owns at Simardahi VDC and 75 bigaha at Khattapiparathi VDC.
He added that an additional 20 bigaha in Khattapiparathi village is registered in the name of his late father Dev Narayan Das, a former head priest. Income from the land was being used for the upkeep of the temple.
Worried about the deteriorating condition of this temple of religious and historical significance in spite of its vast property, the local people have been demanding its renovation and maintenance.
Meanwhile in Terhathum, the construction of a Buddhist monastery has begun at local Nagi Dada of Hyanku village on the occasion of the 1836th Lhosar festival of the Tamu (Gurung) Community. The monastery is being constructed on the initiatives of the Nepal Tamu Chhojha Dhi Association, Athrai. The monastery would be constructed in two years at an estimated cost of Rs 200,000, according to the association.
Biratnagar, Feb. 25: National Assembly Vice-Chairman Chiranjivi Prasad Rijal has said that the role of persons working in the educational sector is vital for producing able citizens in the country.
Inaugurating a function held to mark the fourth annual day of the Koshi Campus and the 25th National Education Day here recently, he said that there should be no politics in education, if there was politicking in the educational sector, it becomes unholy.
On the occasion, Vice-Chairman Rijal presented a gold medal to Miss Junu Rai, a student of Koshi campus, who had won a gold medal in the Siteriya karate event in the Eighth SAF Games.
