Biplav’s Achham district in-charge injured in cross-firing, 21 held Published on: March 27, 2019

KATHMANDU: Police have arrested 21 cadres of Nepal Communist Party led by Netra Bikram Chand alias Biplav in the last two days.

The cadres were rounded up from Chitwan, Achham, Tanahun, Nawalparasi, Nawalpur, Shankhuwasabha, Makwanpur, Ilam, Panchthar, Saptari, Sunsari and Bhojpur districts on Monday and Sunday night, according to a report in Kantipur daily.

Over five dozens Biplav cadres have landed in the police net following the government ban on its activities. The government decided to put an ban the Biplav-led NCP’s activities after a series of explosions took place across the country.

According to police, Achham district in-charge was injured during a cross-firing between security personnel and Biplav cadres in Ramaroshan Rural Municipality of Accham district.

 

 

77 projects to be showcased in Investment Summit Published on: March 27, 2019

KATHMANDU: The government is preparing to showcase 77 projects at the international investment summit to be held on March 29 and 30 in the capital. Of them, 50 are from the government side and 27 on behalf of the private sector.

Meanwhile, all preparations for the summit have been completed, according to the Investment Board of Nepal. The meeting of the IBN held at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers on Tuesday evening also decided to accord high level hospitality to the delegates to the Summit.

More than 600 delegates are expected to attend the Summit from various countries in Kathmandu. Non-resident Nepalis are also taking part in the Summit, according to CEO of the Board Maha Prasad Adhikari. Along with foreign investors, representatives from the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and International Monetary Fund are also taking part in the Summit.

Majority of the guests are expected to arrive in Kathmandu by Thursday. Taking to media persons following the meeting, Finance Minister Dr Yubaraj Khatiwada said a memorandum of understanding will be signed on a dozen of projects during the summit.

ISSR condoles demise of economist Madan Dahal Published on: March 26, 2019

KATHMANDU: The Institute for Strategic and Socio-Economic Research (ISSR) held a condolence function to mourn the demise of its Founding Director, Dr. Madan Dahal on Tuesday. The function was organized at the Durbarmarg-based Pavilion Hall.

During the condolence assembly, ISSR Chairman Prof Dr. Bishwambher Pyakuryal, Prof Dr Govinda Nepal, Naresh Shrestha, Dr. Rabindra Pandey, Dr. Dadhi Adhikari and Dr. Narendraman Shrestha among others expressed grief over the demise of Dahal and wished for the eternal peace of the departed soul.

At the condolence ceremony, Prof Dr. Dilliram Khanal, Dr. Raghubir Bista, Bipindhoj Karki, Prof Dr. Sharad Sharma, Mukti Bahadur Khatri, Dr. Shiva Adhikari, Kusum Shakya, Krishna Ojha, Surendra Kumar Upreti and Manawi Singh Shah remembered late Dahal’s contribution in the field of economics.

Likewise, Bijay Shrestha, Prakashraj Sapkota, Ramchandra Bhattarai, Komalraj Dhungel, Sharmila Acharya, Anupam Khujeli, Jhuma Sharma Pandey, Yam Bahadur Karki, Dr. Charka Khadka, Bhawukraj Neupane among others wished for the eternal peace of the departed soul.

Dahal breathed his last while undergoing treatment for stomach related ailments at Kathmandu Medical College (KMC) on Friday. He was 72.

Dahal had played a noteworthy role in the economic development of the country. Late Dahal had a good understating of public finance and taxation. The Ministry of Finance used to seek regular suggestions from him on economic development. He had also worked as an international consultant for the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Also the chairman of Operating Committee of Mega Bank, Dahal was the founding director at ISSR.

Of late, Dahal was active on social media and had been expressing his views on economic development of the country, steps for economic development and roles for improvements in tax system.

 

 

 DPM Pokharel leaves for US to attend UN conference Published on: March 26, 2019

KATHMANDU: Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister, Ishwor Pokharel has left for the US on Tuesday.

He is leading a Nepali delegation to ministerial level conference on capacity building of peace keeping armies and security under the UN peace keeping mission.

He is scheduled to address the conference at the UN Headquarters on March 29. He will be delivering a speech on contribution by Nepal Army and Nepal Police under UN peace mission. He will be also highlighting on making peacekeeping more effective and results-oriented.

During his stay in the US, the DPM is scheduled to hold meetings with UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, Deputy Secretary Generals including that looking after peace keeping department, and senior US security officials. He will return Nepal on April 3.

 

Case filed against ex-commissioner Pathak Published on: March 26, 2019

KATHMANDU: A corruption case has been filed at Special Court against Raj Narayan Pathak, then commissioner at the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA).

CIAA Spokesperson Pradip Kumar Koirala said the case was filed against Pathak for abusing his authority by taking bribe of Rs 7.8 million on the settlement of dispute relating to an engineering college.

DLGA Committee decides to pass government report Published on: March 26, 2019

KATHMANDU: The parliamentary Delegated Legislation and Government Assurance Committee has decided to pass the report of Government Assurance Sub-Committee with revision.

A meeting of the Committee, under the National Assembly, held today decided to call the concerned ministers and bodies concerned to acquire information about the work progress regarding the issues included in the policy and program brought by the government in the current fiscal year.

Likewise, the meeting also discussed achieving a double-digit economic growth, among others issues.

Indian Foreign Sec. Gokhale arriving here on Thursday Published on: March 26, 2019

KATHMANDU: Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Keshav Gokhale is arriving in Kathmandu on Thursday.

During his two-day visit, he is scheduled to hold talks with Nepali officials on the India-funded projects in Nepal. He will also hold talks on a wide range of bilateral issues besides making a comprehensive review of the implementation of the projects here.

Indian Embassy, however, denied to comment on Gokhale’s visit.

Gagan Thapa leaves for USA, to study at Harvard Published on: March 26, 2019

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress youth leader and former Minister for Health, Gagan Thapa left for USA on Tuesday.

He flew to the USA for study at Harvard University after the university approved his application. Thapa said he was awarded with a scholarship last year but failed to attend owing to personal reasons.

He will be returning Nepal after two weeks.

 

 

 

Police charge baton on engineers picketing Singha Durbar (Video) Published on: March 26, 2019

KATHMANDU: Police resorted to baton charge on demonstrators at Singha Durbar southern gate as they tried to cross the restricted zone at the main administrative headquarters.

A group of irate engineers had reached there to picket Ministry for Urban Development. Some six protestors sustained injuries in police action. Agitators have condemned the police action in a ‘peaceful demonstration’.

Engineers deployed for the post-earthquake reconstruction have gathered in Kathmandu since more than a week after the government decided to cut their incentives.

Engineer Bidhya Baral demanded the government provide health and accident insurances to engineers deployed in the post-earthquake reconstruction. Agitating engineers have warned a stern action against the government if it fails to roll back the decision to cut incentives.

Five broomers fanned out to clean Kathmandu roads Published on: March 26, 2019

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has fanned out five modern broomers to clean Kathmandu roads from Tuesday. The broomers were imported from Italy. KMC has finalized five routes for the broomers in a bid to get the city free from dust. Broomers were purchased at Rs 21.7 million each.

Here’s the route

Route 1: Beginning Teku to Kalanki and then to Soalteemode-Teku-Tripureshwor-Sundhara-New Road-Mahangkaal-Jamal-Lazimpat-Shital Niwas-Teaching Hospital-Naryan Gopal Chowk. Likewise, Jamal-Ghantaghar to Sahidgate.

Route 2: Teku-Tripureshwor-Thapathali-Maitigahr-Babarmahal-Baneshwor-Tinkune to Tribhuvan International Airport. Then to Koteshwor-Pepsicola-Koteshwor-New Baneshwor-Maitighar-Thapathali-Tripureshwor-Kalimati and ending in Balkhu.

Route 3:  Teku-Tripureshwor-Bhotahity-Sigha Durbar to Putalisadak. Then to Kamaladi-Jaya Nepal Hall-Durbarmarg-Narayanhiti-Lazimpat, PM’s residence ending at Maharajgun. While returning, the broomer will ply on Shitwal Niwas-Pani Pokhari-Lainchour-Sorkhakhutte-Balaju-Link road-Naradevi and stop at Teku road.

Route 4: Putalisadak from Teku and then to Kamal Pokhari- Gyaneshwor-Maitidevi-Old Baneshwor-Sinamagal-Airport-Gaushala-Chabahil to Hyatt Hotel. Then to Chabahil-Gaushala-Old Baneshwor-Maitidevi-Putalisadak-Singha Durbar to Teku.

Route 5 : Tripureshwor starting from Teku then to New Road Gate-Basantapur-Indrachowk-New Road-Mahankal-Jamal-Kesharmahal and to Durbarmarg among other places.
