4 june, Geneva- Some 7 million people die prematurely every year from air pollution, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights and the environment said Monday ahead of World Environment Day, noting there are also success stories.
David Boyd, the Special Rapporteur, urged nations to beat air pollution to fulfill their human rights obligations. “Air pollution is a silent, invisible and prolific killer that is responsible for the premature death of 7 million people each year, disproportionately affecting women, children, and poor communities,” said Boyd in a statement here.
He also said: “There are numerous success stories of drastically reducing air pollution from across the world, including China, who is hosting World Environment Day this year. These stories prove that air pollution is a preventable problem.”
Boyd said that every five seconds, a premature death is caused by air pollution and that an estimated 90 percent of the world’s population breathe polluted air, while among the 7 million who die each year, 600,000 are children.
“Failing to ensure clean air constitutes a violation of the rights to life, health, and well-being, as well as the right to live in a healthy environment,” said the UN expert.
He asserted that states must take urgent action to improve air quality to fulfill their human rights obligations.Boyd said clean air is a core component of the right to a healthy environment, together with clean water and adequate sanitation, healthy and sustainably produced food, non-toxic environment, healthy biodiversity, and a safe climate.
The Special Rapporteur said the right should be globally reaffirmed to ensure the enjoyment of this right by everyone, everywhere while upholding the human rights principles of universality and non-discrimination.

June 3 ,LONDON: US President Donald Trump lashed out at London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Monday as he arrived for a three-day state visit to Britain, reviving a long-running enmity between the two politicians.
On landing, he sent out a tweet calling Khan a “stone cold loser” for criticising his red carpet treatment, which includes a private lunch and state banquet hosted by Queen Elizabeth II.
Khan, “who by all accounts has done a terrible job as Mayor of London, has been foolishly ‘nasty’ to the visiting president of the United States, by far the most important ally of the United Kingdom”, he said. “He is a stone cold loser who should focus on crime in London, not me,” Trump wrote, likely referring to a spike in fatal stabbings in the capital which is causing widespread public concern.
Trump and Khan have long clashed on Twitter but Khan wrote a newspaper article on Sunday in which he compared the president to European dictators from the 1930s and 1940s.
Khan, a Muslim whose parents arrived in London from Pakistan, lashed out at Trump’s “deliberate use of xenophobia, racism and ‘otherness’ as an electoral tactic” and his travel ban efforts on mostly Muslim countries.
In a second tweet, Trump compared Khan to New York York’s liberal Mayor Bill de Blasio, with whom he has also clashed, writing that the difference between them was that London’s leader was “only half his height”.
London is bracing for two major protests on Monday and Tuesday, with organisers planning to fly a blimp of a baby Trump dressed in a diaper, with an angry expression on his face.
