Writ filed at Supreme Court to stop mining in Sunkoshi river Published on: June 7, 2019

7 june, kathmandu- A writ has been filed at the Supreme Court seeking the court order to stop excavation of sand, pebbles and stones from the Sunkoshi river.

Advocates Padam Bahadur Shrestha and Chiranjibi Bhattarai filed the writ on Thursday. The writ names the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers and the Ministry of Forests and Environment, among other government bodies, as the defendants.

The petitioners have demanded that the apex court issue a mandamus to stop the mining of river-based materials that is taking place causing direct impact on the entire environment itself as the legal provisions regarding extraction of sand, pebbles, stones has not been implemented in an effective manner.

Likewise, the writ has sought court intervention for immediately implementing and have implemented the laws related to the extraction, management and sale and distribution of river-based materials, citing that the legal provisions which should have been effectively enforced and implemented have been neglected.

The illegal mining of river-based materials like sand, pebbles, stones on the bank of Sunkoshi river on both sides and the river bed from Bahrabise municipality bazaar to Dolalghat has obstructed the river’s natural flow and changed its shape, the writ argues.

The writ states that the formation of big pools due to the illegal mining on the bank of the river on its two sides has spoiled the beauty of the river and also threatened its very existence, and also argues for river conservation by law since there would be long-term environmental effect on humans, wildlife, aquatic animals, waterway, highway, forests and the tourism entrepreneurs due to such rampant excavation activities. Hungary tourist boat death toll reaches 15 Published on: June 6, 2019

6 june, Budapest- The bodies of two more South Korean tourists have been found after a sightseeing vessel sunk in Budapest last week, bringing the death toll to 15, with 13 still missing, police said.

The Mermaid with mainly South Koreans aboard overturned and sank May 29, seconds after colliding with a bigger cruise ship on a busy stretch of the Danube river in the heart of Budapest.

Police said late Wednesday that a body found 50 kilometres (30 miles) south of the Hungarian capital, near the town of Ercsi, was that of a female South Korean passenger from the stricken boat.

A body recovered from the Danube near the accident scene in Budapest was also a female South Korean victim, according to a statement.

Divers have been unable to enter the sunken boat due to the strong current in a river swollen after weeks of rain.
A barge carrying a crane powerful enough to lift the Mermaid arrived in Budapest Wednesday but was to remain docked in the north of the city until the river level subsides enough to allow it to pass under several bridges to reach the accident scene.

Experts said the crane was unlikely to begin the salvage operation before the weekend.
The captain of the river cruise ship, the Viking Sigyn, was charged Saturday over the accident.
He was detained by police on Thursday for questioning for “endangering waterborne traffic resulting in multiple deaths”.

His lawyers have said the 64-year-old veteran is “devastated” by the accident and has insisted he did not make any error.

According to South Korean media reports, Seoul has asked the Hungarian authorities to return the Viking Sigyn to Budapest and keep it there for the duration of the criminal investigation. The ship on Friday continued its journey with a new captain. (RSS)

When the forces approached the house, the militants opened fire intensively and the forces fired back, which led to the killing of 14 terrorists, it added.

West Indies bowl against Australia in World Cup Published on: June 6, 2019

6 june, Nottingham- West Indies won the toss and elected to bowl against Australia in Thursday’s World Cup match at Trent Bridge.

Windies captain Jason Holder was boosted by the presence of Chris Gayle and Andre Russell in his starting line-up after his two key players were declared fit.

Russell was the orchestrator of the West Indies’ win over Pakistan with a spell of fierce pace bowling, while Gayle’s typically attacking half-century finished off the win.

Russell left the field shortly before the end of Pakistan’s innings with knee trouble, while Gayle was seen feeling his lower back and walked gingerly back to the pavilion upon his dismissal.

But both were able to face Australia, with Evin Lewis coming in for Darren Bravo in the only change.
“I think our fast bowlers can extract whatever is in the wicket early on. The nature of the wickets in England is that they don’t change very much,” Holder said.

“We just have to remain disciplined and remain aggressive like we were in our first game against Pakistan.”
Australia were unchanged from the team that beat minnows Afghanistan in their opener.

Captain Aaron Finch claimed he was happy to have been put into bat, saying: “I probably would have had a bat first anyway, it looks dry and hopefully it will spin later. We are starting to take the key moments in games.”
