A writ petition was filed at the Supreme Court on Sunday demanding an order to the government to stop the procedures for the municipal elections slated for February 8 next year.
A group of advocates including Rajan Banjara and Hari Bahadur Mainali in their public interest litigation (PIL) argued that the present ‘unconstitutional’ government has no authority to conduct elections.
The Office of the Prime Minister and the Cabinet, Home Ministry, Ministry of Information and Communications and the Election Commission were made defendants in the case.
The major political parties have already announced to boycott the government and the Election Commission (EC) have claimed that the polls would be held on the schedule. The EC has given permission to 57 political parties to contest the upcoming municipal polls.
