British Gurkhas are getting public support for the case filed for legal action against the British government for discrimination against them. British Lawyer Phil Shiner disclosed this fact in a gathering of ex-British Gurkha soldiers and their family Thursday in Kathmandu.
Phil and six other lawyers including a Nepali Gopal Sivakoti Chintan and Cherie Blair, wife of the British Prime Minister Tony Blair recently filed the case in the British Court against 24 types of discrimination between the British and Gurkha soldiers done by British government.
Lawyer Phil Shiner said, “British people love Gurkhas, now they are aware about the problems faced by Gurkhas and are supporting us, but the Nepali government is not being positive.” He also added that the Gurkha issue is not only a legal issue, but political also.
Gurkhas, famous as brave and honest soldiers have been recruited into the British Army for almost two hundred years. According to an estimate over 30 thousand Gurkhas retired from the service in the British Army without any pension.
Currently, about three thousand Gurkhas are serving the British Army.
