Birgunj strike ends

Businesses and transportation resumed in Birgunj, a business hub in Southern Nepal, from Saturday afternoon after three days of strike by the local residents, who had been demanding compensation to the family of a victim of traffic accident.

According to reports, shops in main commercial areas have opened and vehicular traffic has resumed after the protesting locals, the district administration and the owner of the tanker that hit Premendra B.C of Chhapkaiya in Birgunj to death, reached an agreement.

The owner of the tanker has agreed to provide Rs 200,000 to the family of the victim immediately and pay some Rs 2 million more gradually.

The protesting locals had demanded Rs 2.5 million compensation to the family of the deceased.

On Friday, the protesters smashed two motorbikes and one jeep and forced the Raxoul checkpoint to close down. Schools and colleges also remained closed on Thursday and Friday.
