Athletes protest death of sportsman; Police forms investigating team (update)

Athletes organized demonstrations in various parts of the capital Wednesday morning protesting the killing of a Karate player by a policeman in the capital Tuesday night.

Preliminary reports said Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police, Man Bahadur Adhikari, allegedly shot dead Karate player Rakesh Gurung in Gyaneshwore area Tuesday night.

Traffic movement in various parts of the city was disrupted Wednesday morning due to the protest. The protestors vandalized various shops that were open in the Kantipath area. Protestors also burnt a vehicle at Sano Gauchran area, reports said.

Protestors disrupted traffic in various parts of the city from early morning by burning tyres. Demonstrators demanded strict action against the culprits and fair investigation in the case.

Meanwhile, the police have formed a three-member investigation team under Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Niraj Pun of the Central Investigation Department (CID) to find out the facts of the incident.

According to the spokesperson of the Nepal Police, Ramesh Chand, other members of the investigation team include Superintendent of Police Keshav Adhikari of Valley police and Deputy Superintendent of Police Shushil Bhandari of the legal department at the police headquarters.

The team has been given mandate to submit its report as fast as possible, Chand said.

According to police, Adhikari opened fire as Gurung and two other people tried to stab him with a knife after stopping the vehicle he was in. Police are searching for the two other people who fled the scene. However, Adhikari has not been taken under custody for investigation.

Adhikari is the security guard of UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal. He was returning after leaving Nepal at his residence in Koteshwore. The driver of the vehicle carrying Adhikari was also injured in the incident.

Gurung died while undergoing treatment at the TU teaching hospital at around 11 p.m. on Tuesday.
