The annual report by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence of India for the year 2004-05 states that arms belonging to Nepali Maoists are finding their way to the underworld.

The DRI dossier, submitted to the government on ‘outright smuggling’, expresses concern that the nature of smuggling along the Nepal-India border has changed from “consumer and industrial goods to arms and ammunition, explosives and fake Indian currency notes,” Times of India reported on Wednesday.

The report says that now smugglers employ individuals and smaller groups for supplying contraband. This marks a sharp decline in smuggling by organised syndicates, it adds.

The DRI report says that vehicles coming from Nepal, especially empty oil tankers have been used to smuggle in arms into India.

When contacted by Nepalnews, the Maoists did not have any comments regarding the report.

There were reported cases of Maoists smuggling arms from India during the period of insurgency taking advantage of the porous border with the southern neighbour.

The report mentions Indo-Bangladesh and Indo-Myanmar borders used for smuggling arms and ammunition into India.
