During a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister K P Sharma Oli in Geneva on Monday on the sidelines of the first meeting of the UN Human Rights Council, Annan assured him of his continued support for the successful transition towards establishing permanent peace and stability in Nepal.
According to the Permanent Mission of Nepal in Geneva, Oli conveyed thanks and appreciation of the people and Government of Nepal to Mr. Annan for his consistent support to the peaceful people’s movement in Nepal
“The issues discussed between them ranged from the consolidation of the achievements of the democratic movement, setting into motion of the peace process, recent high-level summit meeting held between the government and the Maoists, election to the Constituent Assembly and the UN role in the peace process, including the management of arms,” the statement said.
DPM Oli expressed his deep concern over the seven Nepali peacekeepers currently serving under the command of the UN Peace Keeping Mission in Congo, who were still being held captive by the rebels there. Annan informed that his office was closely monitoring the situation with the concerned authorities and assured that he would take all necessary steps to secure their safe release at the earliest.
Nepali ambassador and permanent representative to the UN, Gyan Chandra Acharya, and other senior officials of the Foreign Ministry were also present during the meeting.
