An all-party meeting that was held in Prime Minister’s official residence Saturday evening decided to back the government for its action to control Maoist insurgency and maintain law and order in the country.

In the all-party meeting, leaders of national parties present gave the mandate to the government to take any necessary action to contain Maoist insurgency. Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala was absent in the all-party meeting.

Home Minister Khum Bahadur Khadka briefed the leaders of different political parties about the Maoist attacks on Friday night and loss of life and property. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba informed the participants that the government was contemplating declaring an emergency to control the Maoist insurgency.

The meeting could not decide whether the emergency should be declared nationwide or only in the districts severely affected by the insurgency. However, they left it to the government to decide, said leaders of different political parties after the meeting.

The decision of the government relating to emergency would be announced after today’s meeting of the ruling Nepali Congress.
