Action taken against shopkeepers

Kathmandu: The Bureau of Standards and Metrology Regional Office, Dhangadhi took action against 1,312 businessmen and shopkeepers for using weights and measures not conforming to the Standards and Metrology Act in the last fiscal year.

Those facing action were fined from Rs 10 to Rs 1,000 depending on the type of offense under the Standard and Metrology Act.

Similarly, during the last fiscal year the office also took action against a dealer for selling under-weight cooking gas cylinder and another shopkeeper for selling under-weight toffee packet.

The office also checked 2,718 weights, 4,657 balances, 6,282 litres jars and 378 metre scales in various districts under its jurisdiction in the last fiscal year. During the period, the weights and measuring instruments of 1,844 businessmen were renewed and business licenses were issued to 886 businessmen.

The office is also learnt to have collected revenue to the tune of Rs 430,000 in fiscal year 1999/2000 which is seven per cent more than the previous fiscal year.
