The Nepalese Americas Council (NAC) and Nepali Alliance for Democratic Republic (NADR) in Reading, UK have condemned the Gaur tragedy that killed 28 people on March 21.

NAC president Ambika Prasad Adhikari in a statement Monday said they were deeply saddened by the incident and expressed grave concern to the continuing violence and loss of lives and properties in Nepal.

“NAC expresses its strong condemnation for these heinous acts of violence,” the statement reads. NAC called for an immediate and impartial investigation into the incident and to bring the perpetrators to book.

NAC said it is the primary responsibility of the government to promote democratic practices, protect human lives, preserve human rights and provide security to everyone, including women, Madhesis, Dalits and Janjatis, so that they can fully exercise their democratic rights. “In turn, all citizens have the responsibility to refrain from violence and respect the rule of law,” it said. NAC urged the government to remain vigilant in providing security to all its citizens, in particular, to those who are more vulnerable.

NAC has also appealed the agitating parties to fully commit to democratic ideals and process by completely renouncing violence and embracing peaceful means to advance their political agenda.

“While strongly supporting the ongoing peace process and the legitimate demands of all the under-represented groups including the Madhesis and Janjatis, NAC implores all the political groups including the CPM (M) and MJF to join in negotiations with the government to reach a national consensus on critical issues like the future structure of the state, measures to address the demands of marginalised groups, and ways to hold the Constituent Assembly elections on time,” NAC said.

NAC also called upon the Nepali Diaspora and Nepal’s friends and well wishers to support the peace process and to denounce any form of violence and injustice.

Similarly, NADR said the perpetrators of Rautahat massacre must not be left in any cost. NADR demanded that the government take tough action against the culprits, provide compensation to the victim’s families and free treatment to the injured people.

“High caution should be taken that pose threat to communal harmony and the country’s sovereignty. We condemn all the activities that are conspiring against the elections of the constituent assembly. No activities should be allowed to protect the monarchy in the name of religion. Communal harmony should not be deteriorated in the name of cast, religion, race, colour and any such differences,” the statement by NADR said.

It further said, “Nepalese have been expecting peace and New Nepal with cooperation and understanding among all political forces, but the recent unruly development came as an impediment for the whole peace process and the wish of Nepali people.”

NADR has also asked the leaders of eight parties to come to consensus and immediate form the interim government and announce the date of constituent assembly polls.

NAC and NADR have expressed condolences to the bereaved families.
