Two days after the Surya Bahadur Thapa-led Rastriya Janashakti Party distanced itself from monarchy, in principle, the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) today removed ‘constitutional monarchy’ from the party statute.

Talking to reporters after registering the party at the Election Commission (EC), RPP spokesperson Parasuram Khapung said the party submitted its statute at the EC after deleting ‘constitutional monarchy’ from the preamble.

A meeting of the RPP’s central working committee earlier today decided to make the changes in the preamble. However, the forthcoming general convention will take final decision on monarchy and other key political agendas of the party, Khapung added.

The change in the statute seemed to signal a major ideological departure of the RPP, which has long been known as a pro-monarchy party.

On Sunday, the RJP, another pro-monarchy party, registered at the EC after deciding to keep mum on the monarchy. The RJP also decided to leave it to the forthcoming general convention to finalise the agendas for constituent assembly election.
