“It is high time that this interim parliament becomes serious about the problems of Madhes (or Terai) region,” Mahata said, addressing the interim parliament.
“The Madhesis’ problem will not be resolved by arresting some persons,” he said referring to the arrest of workers of Madhesi People’s Rights Forum (MPRF) from the capital on Tuesday. They were arrested for burning copies of interim constitution protesting that it neglects Madhesi issues.
“Every now and then there is Terai bandh being announced. This must draw our attention to the issues raised by Madhesi people,” Mahato said.
He also urged the interim parliament to sensitively consider the amendment proposals put forth by his party regarding the interim constitution. “We had withdrawn the amendment proposal upon getting assurance from the Prime Minister that this interim parliament will make the necessary changes,” he said.
Mahato demanded that a fresh national census be organised ahead of elections of Constituent Assembly and based on the results of that census, he said, the electoral constituencies should be delimited.
