The major four parties have reached informal agreement to divide the vice chancellor positions of four big universities among themselves.

According to reports, the parties have agreed to let the Unified Marxist Leninist (UML) choose its candidate as VC of Tribhuwan University (TU), NC will have VC in Purbanchal University, Maoists will get to appoint their nominee at Pokhara University and NC (Democratic) will bag the position at Nepal Sanskrit University.

Following the agreement, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala is expected to appoint a three-member recommendation committee after which the government will formally appoint the VCs, says Pradeep Nepal, Minister for Education and Sports.

Senior UML leader Nepal had vowed that he will resign from the ministerial position if he is unable to make the appointments soon.

Due to absence of VCs and senior administrators at the universities, the normal functions of the educational institutions have been affected.
