The agitation by the teachers belonging to Nepal Educational Republican Forum took an ugly turn on Friday morning after police intervened a sit-in by them in front of Ministry of Education and Sports in Kesharmahal.
After the teachers resorted to sloganeering and blocked the busy road section, police intervened and resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the crowd. The police also fired tear gas shells to force them away.
As the crowd of agitated teachers retreated, they forced shops to shut down and obstructed traffic movement in Jamal area.
The Forum was scheduled to hold talks with Education Minister Pradeep Nepal this afternoon to end the weeklong school strike.
