Senior leaders of Nepali Congress (NC) have roundly condemned the Maoist-affiliated Young Communist League (YCL) for what they termed as ‘continuing terrorist activities.’

Addressing the tenth national convention of NC’s student wing Nepal Students Union (NSU) in Chitwan on Monday, Congress vice president Sushil Koirala accused the Maoists of giving continuity to their politics of violence through YCL. He stated that NC would firmly defeat all kinds of ‘terrorism.’

Likewise, Minister for Peace and Reconstruction and Congress general secretary Ram Chandra Poudel urged his party members and students to counter the terrorism spread by Maoists and its sister organisation through thoughts and ideas.

Poudel also advised students not to hurry for republic since the first meeting of elected Constituent Assembly will decide about it. “A monarchy without crown is more dangerous than one with crown,” he said.

Meanwhile, the three-day NSU convention is all prepared to elect new student leadership. Current NSU vice president Pradeep Poudel and general secretary Badri Pandey are front-runners in the race for new presidency. Meanwhile, influential student leader Gagan Thapa has announced that he will not run for the election. He said that he decided not to run because there was a risk that whole convention will be derailed if he joins the fray. He has backed Poudel’s panel.
