Nepali Congress (NC) general secretary Ram Chandra Poudel, who is also the Peace and Reconstruction minister, has said the NC will not pose hindrance to Nepal’s turning into a republic.
Poudel said this while speaking at an interaction programme organised on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day in the capital Thursday.
Saying that monarchy thrived on the rift between the democrats and the leftist forces in the past, Poudel said he was against polarisation between these two forces. The eight-party must remain intact to deal with the present difficult situation.
In recent days, the NC general secretary has been vocal against the intensifying Maoist drive for an alliance of left parties on a common agenda of republic. The Congress party has opposed the idea of declaring republic from the parliament and is yet to reveal its official position on monarchy.
The NC has called a three-day meeting of its district presidents beginning Friday, ostensibly to form its view on monarchy.
