A press statement issued by Inter-Religious Council Nepal, organizer of the interaction, said, around 40 Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, Bahai, Bon and Kirat religious leaders participated in the programme.

This was the first time that a high level leader of the CPN Maoist met with religious leaders, the statement added.

Speaking on the occasion, Mahara thanked the religious communities for their role in the people’s movement and in the peace building process and said that his party was well aware of the important role being played by the religious communities in Nepal.

“He spoke about his party’s understanding and position on religion and the expectations of his party from the religious communities,” the statement added.

He cautioned and urged the religious communities in Nepal to be watchful and aware of the danger of external interference from outside forces in the name of religion to create social and political instability and religious conflicts in Nepal.

Representatives from Buddhist, Muslim, Bahai, Kirat and Bon religions also spoke on the occasion.
