As the government is all set to go for the municipal polls, general secretary of the CPN-UML, Madhav Kumar Nepal, said that the King should be ready for the election of the Constituent Assembly, to restore peace in the country.
Addressing a mass meeting in Biratnagar organised by the party’s Koshi Zonal Coordination Committee on Saturday, he said it is high time the King realised what the people really want.
“The Maoists are ready to give up violence and surrender arms if the King is willing to hold elections to a Constituent Assembly, reports quoted Nepal as saying, adding that the international community is also mounting pressure for the same.
Talking about the parties’ 12-point pact with the Maoists, Nepal said the agreement was made with a view to restoring peace in the country.
UML leaders Jhalanath Khanal and KP Sharma Oli said that UN monitoring of the Royal Nepalese Army for the establishment of peace should not be termed as intervention.
Thousands of people participated in the mass meeting despite security forces’ bid to prevent people from attending the rally. Security forces tried to stop people headed for the rally at the Duhabi-Inarwa road section.
According to reports, the chief district officer gave directives to all the 22 ward offices of the sub-metropolitan city to continue their work of birth registration, even during the weekend with a view of discouraging locals and government officials to attend the mass meeting.
The alliance of seven opposition political parties and Maoists reached to the 12-point agreement to restore complete democracy in the country. As per the agreement, the Maoists agreed to join the politics of competition in the condition of holding the elections of constituent assembly to resolve the political impasse of the country.
