The government has decided to publicise the status of people said to have been ‘disappeared’ after they were taken into custody by security personnel, hold ‘summit talks’ before Dashain festival and start process for resettlement of freed Kamaiyas.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has said that more than 500 people arrested by the security forces have been “missing.” The rights body also said it has received 152 complaints regarding the disappearance of citizens by the Maoists.

Earlier, PM Koirala had said the government would publicise the status of the disappeared people once the Maoists did so. The relatives and family members of the disappeared people have been organising regular demonstrations demanding that the whereabouts of the missing people be made public immediately

A meeting of the Council of Ministers held at the Prime Minister’s office in Singha Durbar Monday also formed a committee headed by Minister for Land Reforms and Management Prabhu Narayan Chaudhary to find a permanent solution to the problems of landless people in western terai.

Minister for Forest and Soil Conservation Gopal Rai is a member of the committee while one representative from each seven parties will be included in the committee.

At the beginning of the meeting, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala briefed his cabinet about his meeting with Maoist chairman Prachanda on Sunday. He expressed his commitments to make the ongoing peace talks a success at any cost, reports said.

The cabinet meeting formally approved the agreement between the two leaders to hold summit talks before Dashain festival. Dashain holidays begin on September 29.

Prime Minister Koirala has also the government negotiating team to hold informal talks with the Maoist team and make preparations for a summit meeting. The date will be decided after consulting with the Seven Party Alliance leadership, reports said.
