Police arrested some three dozen victims of the Jana Andolan (People’s Movement II) from the western gate of Singha Durbar Friday morning.

The arrested have been kept at Kamal Pokhari, Singha Durbar and Tinkune police posts.

According to Sarad Oli, district Superintendent of Police at Hanuman Dhoka, the demonstrators were arrested as they staged protests in a restricted area. The police were forced to pick them up because they were blocking the road and entrance to Singha Durbar, Oli added. He said orders have been given to release them.

However, the Singha Durbar police said they have not yet received any orders to release the demonstrators.

The victims have set up tents in Bhadrakali to launch indefinite sit-in protest to pressure the government to meet their demands. They have been demanding compensation and other facilities from the state for those who were injured by police atrocities during the April movement. The government has so far announced compensation only to those who have lost their eyes and legs.

The victims have said they would continue with their demonstrations till their demands were met.
