The government, United Nations monitoring team and the Maoists will begin their visit to the proposed cantonment sites from today.
The joint team is scheduled to visit Kavre and Sindhuli districts to make field inspections of cantonment areas where the Maoist fighters would be confined under UN monitoring.
A tripartite meeting held at the Himalaya Hotel on Friday to discuss “practical modality” of arms and military management of both sides decided to send the team for the inspection of proposed cantonments.
“We held a very good discussion on arms management,” personal representatives of UN secretary general Kofi Annan to assist Nepal peace process, Ian Martin, told the media after the meeting.
He said that discussions with the Nepali Army officials were also very good. The meeting also discussed details of arms management modality and a tripartite agreement that the UN, Maoists and the government will soon sign officially authorizing the UN to assist in arms management.
Home Minister and coordinator of Government talks team Krishna Prasad Sitaula said that they basically discussed the modality of arms management of both sides and they were doing homework to accomplish all the jobs as fixed by top leaders of the seven-party alliance and the Maoists on Tuesday.
Maoist leader Dr Baburam Bhattarai also attended the meeting. He said that they discussed the time and location of possible Maoist cantonments and most probably they would visit tomorrow either in Ilam, Sindhuli or Kavre.
They had agreed that the Maoist camps would be selected in such a way that supply is smooth and accessible.
