Govt. policies, programmes draw mixed reactions

The policies and programmes presented by the government in the parliament on Sunday has drawn mixed reactions.

CPN-UML General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal, Vice-President of the Nepali Congress Sushil Koirala and the president of Nepali Congress – Democratic, Sher Bahadur Deuba, supported the policies and programmes while Rastriya Janashakti Party’s chairman Surya Bahadur Thapa and Rastriya Prajatantra Party’s chairman Pashupati Shumsher Rana termed the policies and programmes as irrelevant to the current context.

RPP Chairman Rana said that the policies and programmes failed to address the epoch-making change.

Rana said the program should have clearly mentioned how and where to put the arms and arms holders. “There should have been a clear mention of legal, technical and practical issues to be addressed for free and fair constituent assembly election.”

“The time-frame of the policies and programmes is not clear, if it has been brought until an interim government is formed, then why there is a plan of four years?” asked RPP chairman Rana. He said that the plans lacked the issue of arms management and peace process.

Former Prime Minister and chairman of Rastriya Janashakti Party Surya Bahadur Thapa said the policy and programmes announced by a government, which was formed on the strength of the historic people’s movement, were frustrating.

“Had it been brought in normal time it would have been a good one, but today’s context and historical background are different, which needed a special policies and programmes,” said Thapa.

Thapa emphasized the need to settle the arms issue to ensure a fearless situation in the countryside before the Maoists join the government and parties take campaigns to the villages.

Chitra Bahadur KC of People’s Front Nepal also called for immediate creation of fearless atmosphere to ensure free and fair polls.
