The Citizens’ Movement for Democracy and Peace (CMDP), an alliance of civil society members, announced fresh programmes on Thursday to pressurize the government for implementation of commitments made by seven political parties and Maoists and to end the status quo.

The CMDP has decided to hold a sit-in protest at Ratna Park and 10 districts of the country next Wednesday to protest against the political parties and their engagement with minor issues while forgetting major ones.

A press statement issued by the CMDP after a two-day meeting with several section of society said the pro status quo element of the parties have been active against the eight point agreement between the top leaders of the seven party alliance and Maoists.

“CMDP will demand that the government execute the eight-point agreement, drive the peace process to a purposeful conclusion, announce the date for election to the constituent assembly, dissolve the House of Representatives, respect the ceasefire code of conduct in letter and spirit and punish those high-level army officers responsible for human rights abuses during the peaceful Janandolan,” the statement adds.

“We are concerned that the Maoists, too, have not fulfilled their obligations in the 12-point understanding and the ceasefire code of conduct. The omissions and commissions on their part can only provide ground to regressive forces within and outside the House of Representatives that wish to engage in reactionary missions,” the statement said.

“The people want peace talks to achieve results, and want lasting peace through formation of an interim government, peaceful management of arms of the Maoists and the state and the elections of the constituent assembly,” the statement added.

Sixty three people including Dr Devendra Raj Pandey, Padma Ratna Tuladhar, Krishna Pahadi, Dr Mahesh Maskey, Dr. Mathura Prasad Shrestah, Prof. Krishna Khanal, Sundar Mani Dixit, Dr. Om Gurung, Mall K Sundar and others have signed the statement.
