The Supreme Court Wednesday issued a show cause notice to the Kathmandu Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to present its case against complaints filed by three petitioners against last week’s KMC decision to slap entry fees to tourists visiting the Basantapur Durbar Square.
The Durbar Square Tourism Promotion Struggle Committee is spearheading a movement to levy the charge arguing the KMC’s move will reduce visitors to the area and hamper business.
The notice was issued by a single bench of Chief Justice Keshab Prasad Upadhaya. The KMC says the daily collections of nearly Rs. 45,000 will be invested to upkeep the world heritage site.
Bhaktapur and Lalitpur municipalities have been collecting such fees unhindered.
