Kathmandu, August 27: One Maoist guerilla was killed in an encounter with police in Phiyandanada village of Gorkha district, about 200 kilometer north west of Kathmandu, Sunday, police said.
According to police, the incident occurred when Maoist insurgents suddenly attacked the police team on patrol in that area. There was a heavy exchange of fire between the police and rebels for about two hours, police said.
Police have suspected some more casualties in the incident. However, it could not be confirmed. The identity of the Maoist rebel, who was killed by police also could not be known as the body was taken away by the insurgents.
Some policemen were also injured in the incident. However, police did not give further details.
In the recent days, Maoist insurgents have intensified attacks against police in different districts including Kathmandu valley.
Only recently, communist rebels attacked the Modern Indian School in Chovar and set fire on three vehicles of the school.
Communist Party of Nepal ( Maoist) has launched an armed insurgency aiming at overthrowing the present multi-party system and monarchy and establish one-party communist rule in Nepal.
Ever since the Maoist party started the armed insurgency five years ago, more than 1500 people have been killed in insurgency related incidents.
However, human rights organisations have put the number of people killed in the insurgency at more than 3000.
