The joint team of United Nations and representatives of the government and the CPN (Maoist) visited proposed cantonment sites of Surkhet and Kailali districts on Tuesday.
The team inspected the cantonment site at Masuriya of Kailali district and Dashrathpur of Surkhet district today.
The team inspected the proposed cantonment sites of Palpa and Rolpa districts on Monday. The team also decided that Dahaban area of the Rolpa district is suitable place for the cantonment.
According to reports, UN security expert Jan Erik Wilhemson, conflict expert of UN team John Norris, Minister for Labour and Transport Management and member of the government talks team Ramesh Lekhak, officials at the Home and Defense ministries, Nepal Police Force, Armed Police Force, Nepali Army and Maoist Deputy Commanders are participating in the joint inspection team.
The team had also inspected the Maoist-proposed cantonment sites in Illam’s Kamaljhoda at Chulachuli VDC, Kamidanda of Kavre district and Sankatar of Dudhauli VDC in Sindhuli.
As per the agreement between the seven-party alliance and the Maoists, there will be seven main cantonments along with 21 tributary cantonments where the PLA members will be kept along with their weapons under close monitoring of the UN. The cantonments have been proposed in Ilam, Palpa, Kavre, Sindhuli, Surkhet, Rolpa and Kailali districts.
