Kathmandu, June 28: The 36th meeting of the Nepali Congress Central Working Committee which sat for its sixth day today under the chairmanship of party Central President and Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, discussed the report presented by general secretary Sushil Koirala on party activities and preparations for the l0th general convention.
The meeting today commenced a review of the role that the party should play to face the challenges before it, organisational activities, the state of the party, and activities that have taken place in connection with preparations for the coming general convention, according to party spokesman Narahari Acharya.
According to the spokesman, former prime minister Krishna Prasad Bhattrai said at the meeting that real strides have to be made over the question of party unity instead of just something for show, he said he fully suppported the agenda of clamping down on corruption, bringing about good governance and ensuring law and order brought forth by Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and stressed that in this connection genuine measures should be taken and the credibility and image of the party enhanced among the people.
Presenting his report, general secretary Koirala furnished details about party activities that have taken place since the ninth general convention and the Nepalgunj general committee meeting, pointed out the challenges that the party has to face at present and said the party organisation has to be given new shape.
Pointing out that the preparations for the l0th general convention are being made with a view to giving the party organisation a new shape, the general secretary said a policy paper would be prepared to review the party’s situation in the l0 years since the restoration of democracy, and the role played by the party after reaching the entities of governance. The policy paper would this time be made available in advance to all the units of the party and a national level discussion held.
On the basis of the conclusions reached at those discussions, the policy paper will be refined and presented to the general convention, general secretary Koirala informed the meeting.
Former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, Home Minister Govinda Raj Joshi and other central members Bal Bahadur Rai, Basu Risal, Bijaya Kumar Gachchhadar, Dhundiraj Shastri, Maheshwar Singh, Sunil Bhandari and PL Singh expressed their views about different aspects of the report presented.
They stressed the need for streamlining the party, for holding organised discussions to resolve the problems that have arisen in the party, activating the party units, making everyone feel the impartiality of the party and working in accordance with the constitution, spokesman Acharya said.
The party central working committee is to meet again at 7.30 am tomorrow at the Prime Minister’s residence at Baluwatar.
