Kathmandu, July 14:The Campus of International Languages today felicitated Prof. Dr. Rameshwar Prasad Adhikari, a senior teacher and educationist who served the campus as a Chief for three times, at a function organised to mark the campus’s 39th anniversary.

Former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba wrapped the elderly professor with a woollen shawl and presented him with a token of appreciation for his unfailing contribution to the development of Nepal’s education.

Speakers at the programme shared a common view that languages provided people to acquire knowledge of the world and also to establish intimacy with foreign friends. They, however, painted a bleak picture of Nepal’s education system which “does not produce skilled human resources.”

The campus, in which students from 26 countries learn 12 different international languages, had to be improved by constructing infrastructure necessary for its development.

“Nepal’s education policy has to be drastically changed,” said Deuba. “It should rather produce technical manpower needed for all round development of the country.”

This would also reduce the alarmingly rising unemployment problem, he said.

State Minister for Education and Sports Dilendra Prasad Badu said that the government was aware of the fact that the current education system produced little result. “We are planning to amend laws necessary to bring about changes in our education sector, which receives about seven percent of the total budget.”

He said that everybody concerned should evaluate the past performance and take strategies for future accordingly.

Prof. Adhikari suggested the Tribhuvan University authority to treat the campus differently and that it should be converted into an institution for teaching languages and a research centre.

Earlier, poet Megha Raj ‘Manjul’ welcomed the guests and participants at the function chaired by the campus chief Dhan Prasad Pandit.
